Product Overview

A biogas plant lives on moving slurry — feeding manure, food waste and crop residue into the digester, recirculating sludge, and pumping out digestate. All of it is thick, fibrous and gassy, and it’s a reliable way to clog a pump that wasn’t built for it. A ZWL direct-coupled self-priming sewage pump suits several of these duties well.

Fibre is the challenge

Digester feedstock and digestate are full of long fibre — straw, undigested plant matter, food-waste strings. That’s exactly what wraps an ordinary impeller. The ZWL’s non-clog passage clears fibre up to about five times the port diameter and solids up to 60% of it, so the fibrous slurry flows through. Being self-priming and dry-mounted, it draws from the reception pit or tank on its own, primes itself after the first fill with no foot valve, and is serviced above ground rather than in the slurry.

Note on gassy media

Digestate and feed slurry can carry entrained gas, and any self-priming pump copes better with that than a submerged one that has to be kept flooded. Keep the medium within limits — temperature ≤80°C, solids under about 15% of weight — and the ZWL handles digester transfer cleanly. Cast iron suits most agricultural digesters; stainless steel is worth it where the feedstock or digestate is more corrosive.
