Understanding common AODD pump problems​ and their solutions can save you downtime and repair costs. This guide covers the most frequent issues encountered with pneumatic diaphragm pumps​ and provides clear steps to resolve them.

  1. Pump Not Operating or Running Slowly

If your QBY pneumatic diaphragm pump​ fails to start or runs slower than usual, check the following:

Check the air inlet filter​ – Debris or contamination in the air filter or air preparation unit can restrict airflow. Clean or replace the filter element.

Inspect the air valve​ – The air valve may be stuck due to dirt or dried lubricant. Clean it thoroughly with a suitable cleaning solution.

Check for worn air valve components​ – If the air valve is worn, it may not distribute air properly. Replace worn parts as needed.

Examine center body seals​ – Severely worn seals will allow air to escape from the exhaust port. Use only GLYD rings for replacement.

Verify piston movement​ – Ensure the piston in the air valve moves freely without binding.

Check lubricant type​ – If the oil viscosity is too high, the piston may stick. Use light, anti-freeze lubricant (ISO Grade 15/5WT).

  1. Pump Operates But Low Flow or No Liquid Output

When your air operated double diaphragm pump​ runs but delivers little or no fluid, try these solutions:

Check for cavitation​ – Reduce the pump speed to allow liquid to fully enter the chamber. Cavitation occurs when the pump cycles faster than the liquid can fill the chamber.

Inspect the ball valves​ – If the pumped fluid is incompatible with the elastomer, the balls may swell and stick. Replace with chemically compatible material.

Tighten all inlet connections​ – Loose clamps, especially near the inlet ball valve, can cause air leakage and reduce suction. Ensure all fittings are securely tightened.

  1. Air Valve Icing

AODD pump air valve icing​ is a common issue in humid environments. The expanding compressed air cools rapidly, causing moisture to freeze.

Solution:​ Install an air dryer or moisture separator in the compressed air line to reduce water content. In cold climates, use anti-freeze lubricant in the air system.

  1. Bubbles at Pump Outlet

If you see air bubbles in the discharged fluid, it usually indicates:

Diaphragm rupture​ – A torn diaphragm allows air to mix with the pumped fluid. Replace the diaphragm immediately.

Loose clamps​ – Check and tighten all clamps, especially on the inlet side.

  1. Fluid Leaking from Air Exhaust Port

This is a clear sign of diaphragm failure​ in your pneumatic diaphragm pump. The diaphragm has ruptured, allowing fluid to enter the air side of the pump.

Solution:​ Disassemble the pump, replace the damaged diaphragm, and ensure the diaphragm and inner/outer plates are properly clamped on the shaft.

  1. Chattering or Noisy Valves

If the check valves produce a rattling or chattering sound:

Solution:​ Increase the inlet or outlet head pressure. Low differential pressure across the valves causes them to flutter rather than seat properly.

Maintenance Best Practices

To extend the service life of your QBY air operated double diaphragm pump:

Before disassembly: Mark the left and right chambers for correct reassembly. Depressurize the air line and drain all fluids into appropriate containers. Wear protective gloves, goggles, and safety caps.

Regular inspections: Check ball valves, seats, and diaphragms for wear, chemical attack, or cracking. Install an air preparation unit (filter, regulator, lubricator) to keep compressed air clean.

Freezing prevention: When pumping media that may freeze, install a shut-off valve at the pump inlet. Close the valve before stopping the pump, then run the pump for a few minutes to clear remaining liquid from the chamber.

Diaphragm replacement: Clean the connecting rod and bushing thoroughly. Do not damage the white PTFE seal ring. Reassemble exactly as before.
