Installing and Starting a CDL(F) Vertical Multistage Pump
October 26, 2026 2 min read Haquan

- Bolt the pump base down on a level, solid foundation. The pump is tall and must not rock.
- Support the suction and discharge pipes so their weight is not on the pump.
- Fit isolating valves on both sides and a check valve on the discharge.
- Fill the pump through the priming plug and vent all air. The CDL(F) is not self-priming.
- Check the direction of rotation with a brief start, against the arrow on the pump.
- Start with the discharge valve almost closed, then open it slowly to the duty point.
- Check the current against the nameplate and listen for cavitation.
- If fitted, set the protector for dry running, phase loss and overload.
The two mistakes we see most
- Starting dry, which damages the seal within moments
- Running against a closed valve for long periods, which heats the water inside the pump
