Product Overview

The mechanical seal is a small part that decides a lot. On a ZWL direct-coupled self-priming sewage pump it’s what stops the medium leaking out along the shaft — and it’s one of the parts that wears in tough duty. Getting the seal right for your liquid means fewer leaks and longer runs between service.

Why the seal matters here

The ZWL uses a mechanical seal at the shaft. In clean-ish water it lasts a long time. But in abrasive, gritty or hot media, the seal faces are the front line — abrasive particles score soft faces, and heat degrades the elastomers. A seal that suits clean water can fail quickly on slurry or hot effluent, so the seal spec should follow the medium.

Matching the seal to the medium

  • General sewage and water → the standard seal is fine.
  • Abrasive / gritty media (slurry, sand, mining, coal) → harder seal faces (silicon carbide / tungsten carbide) resist the abrasion far better than softer faces.
  • Corrosive media (chemical, tannery, POME, rubber) → seal faces and elastomers chosen for chemical compatibility, alongside the stainless steel body.
  • Hot media (POME, process effluent) → elastomers rated for the temperature (the pump runs to ≤80°C standard, ~200°C special).

When a ZWL leaks along the shaft, the seal (or the sealing ring behind it) is usually the cause — both are normal wear/service items and are quick to replace.
