The mechanical seal is a small part that decides a lot. On a ZWL direct-coupled self-priming sewage pump it’s what stops the medium leaking out along the shaft — and it’s one of the parts that wears in tough duty. The ZWL uses a mechanical seal at the shaft. In clean-ish water it lasts a long time. A seal that suits clean water can fail quickly on slurry or hot effluent, so the seal spec should follow the medium.
