Cast Iron vs Stainless Steel ZWL Self-Priming Pump

The ZWL comes in cast iron or stainless steel. Here’s how to choose the right material by your medium’s pH and chemistry — and not overspend.

Product Overview

The ZWL comes in two materials, and picking the right one is mostly about one thing: how aggressive your liquid is. Choose wrong and you either overpay for stainless you didn’t need, or you put cast iron into a corrosive stream and watch it fail early. Here’s how to get it right.

Cast iron — the standard workhorse

For ordinary sewage, drainage, pond water, farm slurry and neutral effluent, cast iron is the standard body on the ZWL direct-coupled self-priming sewage pump. It’s tough, handles abrasion and solids well, and it’s the economical choice. Its limit is chemistry: cast iron suits media in roughly the pH 6–9 range. In plain dirty water, that’s plenty.

Stainless steel — for aggressive media

When the liquid is corrosive, stainless steel earns its higher price. The stainless ZWL widens the tolerance to about pH 2–13 (some builds 1–14), so it stands up to acidic and alkaline streams — chemical effluent, dye and textile waste, food and slaughter streams, brackish and coastal water. It’s also the cleaner, more hygienic choice around food and process work.

Both share the same non-clog, self-priming design and the same performance range — only the wetted material changes. Not sure how aggressive your liquid is? Send us the pH, temperature and what’s in it, and we’ll tell you honestly which body you need.
