IHG Stainless Steel Chemical Inline Pump: 304 or 316, and What to Check

When the liquid would corrode cast iron, the pipeline pump is built with stainless steel wetted parts and becomes an IHG. The hydraulics, sizes and model numbers stay the same as the ISG, so a duty can be moved from cast iron to stainless without changing the pipework.

304 or 316?

304 stainless steel suits many mild chemicals and clean process liquids. 316, with its molybdenum content, is the safer choice where chlorides are present or the chemistry is more aggressive. Stainless steel is not resistant to everything, so name the chemical, its concentration and its temperature, and we will check the material and the seal for that duty.

Two real orders

ModelDutyMaterial
IHG125-200B120 m³/h at 40 m, acid and alkali liquids, system pressure 0 to 2 MPa304 stainless steel
IHG150-400B174 m³/h at 40 m, acid and alkali liquids, system pressure 0 to 2 MPa304 stainless steel

Both duties ran at up to 2 MPa, above the standard 1.6 MPa system limit of the range, so the pressure had to be stated with the order and the build confirmed for it.

Before ordering

  • Chemical name, concentration and temperature
  • Any solids, and their size
  • System pressure, if above 1.6 MPa
  • Seal preference, if your plant has a standard
