Two 304 Stainless IHG Pumps for Acid and Alkali at 2 MPa: An Order Explained

This order was for two vertical stainless steel chemical pipeline pumps on an acid and alkali line. The buyer’s specification was short and clear, and one line in it changed how the pumps had to be built.

The line that mattered

Our pipeline pumps are rated for a system pressure of 1.6 MPa, counted as suction pressure plus pump head. This line ran at up to 2 MPa. A pressure above 1.6 MPa has to be stated with the order so that the casing and the connections are built for it. That is the first thing we check on any IHG enquiry, and the reason we always ask for the system pressure, not just the head.

Why 304 here

The buyer specified 304 stainless steel for this plant. For liquids with chlorides or stronger chemistry we would look at 316. Either way, the chemical, its concentration and temperature decide the material and the seal.

Both models are in the pipeline pump selection table; IHG uses the same model list as ISG.
