Abattoir effluent is one of the harder wastewaters to pump. It’s greasy, warm, protein-rich and full of solids — offal fragments, fat, hair, paunch material — and it’s the kind of stream that clogs and corrodes ordinary pumps in short order. For that duty a stainless steel ZWL direct-coupled self-priming sewage pump is the sensible pick.
Solids and grease, cleared
The ZWL’s non-clog passage is designed to pass exactly this kind of chunky, fibrous load — solids up to about 60% of the port diameter and fibre up to five times it. So the offal, fat and paunch material that blocks a normal pump flows through instead. Being self-priming, it mounts above the collection pit, primes itself after the first fill (no foot valve), and stays accessible for the frequent, thorough cleaning a meat plant needs for hygiene.
Stainless for the chemistry
Slaughter waste is biologically aggressive and often washed down with hot water and cleaning chemicals. Stainless steel is the right wetted material here — it’s cleanable and resists the corrosive, acidic conditions (roughly pH 2–13 tolerance versus cast iron’s 6–9), and it handles the medium up to around 80°C as standard. Cast iron is only appropriate on the mildest, most diluted parts of the stream.
