How to Select the Right ZWL Self-Priming Pump

Picking the right ZWL direct-coupled self-priming sewage pump isn’t complicated — it comes down to five numbers and one honest look at your liquid. Here’s the checklist we walk customers through.

1. Flow — how much per hour

How much liquid you need to move, in m³/h. If you’re emptying a pit or basin in a set time, that gives you the flow. The ZWL range spans 8 to 800 m³/h, so there’s a model for almost any volume.

2. Head — how high and how far

Add the vertical lift to a friction allowance for the pipe length and bends. That total head decides the model. The range covers 10 to 80 m — including genuine high-head units if you’re pushing up or a long way.

3. Suction lift — how far below the pump

The liquid can sit up to 4.5–5.5 m below the pump and still be primed. Keep within that, mount close to the liquid, and keep the suction line short (up to ~10 m) and airtight.

4. What’s in the liquid — sets the size and confirms non-clog

The ZWL passes solids up to about 60% of the port diameter and fibre up to five times it. If your media has large or stringy solids, you may size the port up for solids-passing, not just flow. Keep total solids under about 15% of the medium’s weight.

5. Material — how aggressive the liquid is

Cast iron for ordinary sewage and neutral media (pH 6–9). Stainless steel for corrosive streams (pH 2–13) — chemical, dye, food, slaughter, coastal.
