Chopper Pump Troubleshooting – 5 Common WQK Problems Fixed

Even the best chopper pump​ can develop issues. Here are five problems I’ve seen most often with WKQ/QG series pumps and how to fix them.

Problem 1: Pump Runs But No Water
Cause: Vapor lock or blocked suction. The pump may be running too fast for liquid to enter. Slow down the air supply (if variable speed) or check for debris blocking the intake.
Fix: Clear the suction area. Reduce pump speed temporarily. Prime the pump by pouring water into the discharge pipe.

Problem 2: Low Flow or Weak Discharge
Cause: Worn impeller or excessive cutter gap. After months of use, the gap between rotating and fixed blade widens beyond 0.5 mm.
Fix: Measure the gap with a feeler gauge. Adjust back to 0.2–0.5 mm. If the impeller edges are rounded, replace the impeller and cutter set together.

Problem 3: Pump Trips Breaker Repeatedly
Cause: Overload from jammed impeller, low voltage, or wet motor.
Fix: Clear any debris jamming the impeller. Check voltage at the pump terminals — it should be within 10% of rated. Megger the motor winding; if below 1 MΩ, dry the motor.

Problem 4: Strange Noise During Operation
Cause: Cavitation, bearing wear, or loose impeller.
Fix: Check suction for blockage causing cavitation. Listen for bearing rumble — replace if noisy. Tighten impeller nut if loose.

Problem 5: Leaking Oil or Water Around Seal
Cause: Failed mechanical seal.
Fix: Replace the double mechanical seal assembly. Check shaft for scoring. Replace if damaged.
