Most people obsess over flow and head. Fair. But if you run a chopper pump and ignore the cutter clearance, you’re leaving performance on the table — or worse, inviting a jam.
The Sweet Spot: 0.2 to 0.5 mm In the WQK/QG design, the rotating blade mounts on the impeller side and sweeps past a fixed cutter plate. Too tight (<0.2 mm) and you risk metal-on-metal contact as parts expand or flex. Too loose (>0.5 mm) and rags slip through uncut, wrapping the impeller like spaghetti. We recommend checking this gap every 3–6 months in dirty service: 1. Kill power and lock out. 2. Remove the pump or access the suction. 3. Try sliding a 0.2 mm feeler gauge — it should just touch. 4. Adjust the base plate to keep max gap under 0.5 mm.
What Happens When It Drifts • Wide gap: Flow looks okay at first, then declines. Cutting effect fades; you see whole wipes in the discharge. • Tight gap: Motor draws higher current, trips protector, or makes a rhythmic scraping noise.
