Cutter vs Non-Clog Sewage Pump: When Do You Need Cutting

A cutter pump costs more than a plain non-clog pump, so the honest question is: do you actually need the cutting, or are you paying for something your job doesn’t require? Let me save you some money — or save you a lot of headaches, depending on which side you’re on.

What a non-clog pump does

A non-clog submersible sewage pump is designed to *pass* solids. The impeller and passages are shaped so that a solid up to a certain size goes straight through without getting stuck. For a lot of jobs — municipal sewage, storm water with some grit, effluent that’s mostly liquid — that’s all you need. It’s simpler and cheaper.

The catch: non-clog means “passes solids up to X mm.” It does not mean “handles anything.” Long, stringy, fibrous material is its weakness. Rags, wipes, hair, plastic, fibrous plant matter — these can still wrap around the impeller and choke it, even on a “non-clog” pump.

What a cutter pump adds

A GNWQ cutter sewage pump puts a hardened cutter disc right at the pump inlet. Before anything reaches the impeller, the cutter shreds it. On our GNWQ, that disc is a 48HRC alloy cutter, paired with a heat-treated 3Cr13 semi-open impeller — built to keep an edge in abrasive, dirty water.

The result: stringy stuff that would strangle a non-clog pump gets chopped into small pieces and flows straight through. No wrapping, no choking, no midnight callout to unclog it.

The simple decision rule

Ask one question: is there stringy or fibrous material in the water?

• Mostly liquid, some grit, round-ish solids → non-clog is fine. Don’t overspend.
• Rags, wipes, hair, fiber, bedding, plastic, “flushable” wipes → get the cutter. This is where non-clog pumps fail, and it’s exactly what the cutter is for.

Places we almost always recommend a cutter: septic tank service, hospitals and hotels (lots of wipes and hygiene products), farms with bedding and fiber, small package treatment plants on a rag-heavy inlet.

Places a non-clog usually does the job: clean-ish effluent transfer, drainage, storm water without much fiber.
