ZWL Self-Priming Pump for Municipal Sewage Treatment

The ZWL direct-coupled self-priming pump handles raw municipal sewage — solids, rags and all — with no foot valve and no priming. Here’s why treatment plants use it.

Product Overview

Municipal sewage is about as unforgiving as pumped liquid gets: grit, rags, wipes, plastic, and a steady load of long fibrous material, all mixed into water that never stops flowing. A pump that sits in that duty has to prime itself reliably, pass the junk without choking, and keep going for years. That’s the job the ZWL direct-coupled self-priming sewage pump was built for.

Why treatment plants reach for it

At a municipal pumping station or inlet works, the pump usually sits on dry ground above the wet well, not down in it. A self-priming design suits that perfectly — it draws the sewage up on its own, with no foot valve to clog and no need to pour in priming water every time it starts. After the first fill, it primes itself on every start-up through its axial-reflux external-mixing chamber.

Two things matter here day to day:

  • It doesn’t clog. The wide flow passage and non-clog impeller pass solids up to about 60% of the port diameter and fibres up to roughly five times the port diameter. On a DN300 unit that’s solids around 180 mm — enough for the rag-and-fibre load real sewage carries.
  • It’s easy to service dry. Because it’s not submerged, an operator inspects and maintains it above ground, without lifting a fouled pump out of a wet well.

Cast iron or stainless steel

For ordinary municipal sewage, cast iron is the standard, economical body. Where the influent is more aggressive — industrial-mixed flows, low pH, corrosive trade effluent feeding the plant — the stainless steel version widens the tolerance from roughly pH 6–9 up to about pH 2–13.

ZWL range for sewage duty

  • Flow rate: 8–800 m³/h
  • Head: 10–80 m
  • Port size: DN25–DN300
  • Passable solids: up to ~60% of port diameter (≈180 mm on DN300)
  • Material: cast iron (pH 6–9) or stainless steel (pH 2–13)

Tell us your station’s flow, the lift to your discharge, and roughly what’s in the sewage, and we’ll size the right ZWL for it.

Typical Applications

  • municipal sewage treatment
  • sewage pumping stations
  • inlet works
  • storm water
  • urban drainage
  • wastewater transfer
